The Chicago Blackhawks were the second team to deal for forward Jiri Sekac in less than a year’s time when they picked up the undrafted 23-year old right wing in a deal that sent out veteran forward Ryan Garbutt.
In comparison, the Toronto Maple Leafs were just the first team to deal for Jared Cowen, a former first round pick blue liner who was sent to the rebuilding club in the blockbuster that shipped former Toronto captain Dion Phaneuf to the Ottawa Senators.
Now, both teams are offering up the respective players for nothing.
Sekac and Cowen were both announced on the waiver wire for Friday morning, giving the other 29 NHL teams the next 24 hours to place claims for the two players before they will be eligible for reassignment to the AHL.
With Chicago, Sekac – who boasts 10 goals and 27 points over a collective 97 career NHL games – had zero goals and one assist in six games. Earlier in the year, he had recorded a goal in his lone game for the San Diego Gulls of the AHL, and earned and goal and three points in 22 games for the Anaheim Ducks prior to being dealt to the Blackhawks.
Cowen, on the other hand, has yet to play a game for Toronto. He was just activated off injured reserve earlier this morning, where he’s been since getting dealt to the Leafs.
