The Los Angeles Kings were reportedly looking for depth defense to add to their lineup heading into the 2016 trade deadline – and Rob Scuderi of the Chicago Blackhawks seems to be the piece they were most willing to pick up.

McKenzie went on to suggest that, in the preliminary stages of working through the trade, there may be salary retention involved.

Drafted 134th overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1998, Scuderi was dealt to the Blackhawks earlier this year; Ehrhoff, on the other hand, came from Pittsburgh to Los Angeles during the 2015 off-season as a free agent. Both player have been waived this year and subsequently re-assigned to the AHL (Ehrhoff to the Ontario Reign, Scuderi to the Rockford Ice Hogs) but both hold considerable NHL experience that could prove of value in the post-season. In three AHL games for Rockford, Scuderi has no points; in five AHL games for Ontario, Ehrhoff has three assists.

While Ehrhoff will become an unrestricted free agent this summer, the Kings – should the deal be finalized later this afternoon – will still be on the hook for part of Scuderi’s salary until the end of the 2016-17 season.
