Patrick Kane recorded an assist in Chicago’s 3-2 home loss to the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday, ending his three-game point drought and becoming the first member of the Blackhawks to reach the 90-point plateau in more than 20 years.
Kane, whose previous best was an 88-point effort in 2009-10, set up captain Jonathan Toews’ second-period goal to extend his career-high total to 90. Chicago hadn’t had a player hit that mark since 1993-94, when Jeremy Roenick recorded his second consecutive 107-point season.
The 27-year-old Kane has a 13-point lead over Dallas Stars captain – and reigning NHL scoring champion – Jamie Benn in the race for the Art Ross Trophy. He ranks second to Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin (42) for the league lead in goals with 38 and is eight assists behind Ottawa Senators defenseman Erik Karlsson (60) for the top spot.
It has been quite the offensive season for Kane, whose 26-game point streak from October 17-December 13 is the longest in franchise history and longest ever by a United States-born player in the NHL. He became an All-Star for the fifth time in his impressive career and reached the 21-goal mark for the eighth time in eight seasons in the NHL.
Selected first overall in the 2007 draft, Kane registered at least 70 points in each of his first four campaigns, notching 72 en route to the Calder Trophy in 2007-08. He has collected 243 goals and 404 assists in 647 regular-season games while recording 48 tallies and 114 points in 116 playoff contests.
The 5-foot-11, 177-pounder has won three Stanley Cup championships with the Blackhawks, capturing the Conn Smythe Trophy in 2013 after registering nine goals and 10 assists in 23 postseason games. A native of Buffalo, Kane has represented the U.S. in a number of international tournaments, winning the bronze medal at the 2007 IIHF World Junior Championship and silver at the 2010 Winter Olympics.
