The Chicago Blackhawks have been without starting netminder Corey Crawford with an upper body-related injury (dealing with either concussion symptoms or vertigo) for a chunk of the spring.

The team was worried that he may not be back in time for the start of the post-season, which would have had them playing at least their first game without both their starting netminder and top pairing defenseman Duncan Keith.

That may still be the case, but things are starting to look up; Crawford reportedly took part in on-ice workouts on Saturday morning, which suggests that he’s progressing in a promising way. The starter, who has gone 35-18-3 this year with a .926 save percentage in all situations, hadn’t even been participating in on-ice workouts as early as last week; seeing him out on the ice instead of on solid ground is at least a step in the right direction.

The Blackhawks have gone 4-5-1 in their last handful of games, which is likely a step below where they’d like to be finishing out their 2015-16 campaign. At the moment, they’re sitting four points out on being able to claim home ice advantage in the playoffs; while they likely won’t get Crawford back in time to see their fortunes reverse, earning him back for the start of the post-season would certainly help them regain some of the competitive advantage they forfeit by starting on the road.

The club will next play on Sunday, when they face the Boston Bruins.
