In the 2014-15 season, the Art Ross Trophy went to Jamie Benn – who finished the year with just 87 points in his full 82-game season.
This year, Patrick Kane has already blown past that number – and he just won’t stop.
Kane recorded his 100th point of the 2015-16 NHL season on a hat trick goal over the Boston Bruins on Sunday afternoon, becoming the first player to hit the 100-point mark since Sidney Crosby hit 104 points in the 2013-14 season to win the Art Ross. The way things are trending, he also looks like he could be the first American-born Art Ross winner in NHL history.
Drafted first overall by the Chicago Blackhawks in 2007, Kane is currently the highest-scoring player in his draft class by over 200 points; he’s sitting on 657 points (and counting) through the second period of his 654th career NHL game. He’s also the highest-scoring player to be drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks since the team took Jeremy Roenick with the eighth overall selection in 1988; his on-ice career in a vacuum is certainly one of the most impressive both in Blackhawks history and in American hockey.
The Blackhawks head into the third period of their Sunday game against Boston up by a 6-0 lead; if they continue to hold off the Bruins (which appears likely), the game will earn Kane his 100th point and head coach Joel Quenneville his 800th NHL career coaching victory.
