The Chicago Blackhawks bolstered their defensive depth on Friday afternoon when they acquired veteran defenseman Christian Ehrhoff from the Los Angeles Kings – and now, they’re reassigning prospect Viktor Svedberg to the Rockford Ice Hogs of the American Hockey League to make room.

Svedberg, and undrafted free agent pickup from Sweden, stands at an imposing 6 foot 8 and 238 lbs. In his 19 games of NHL play with the Blackhawks this year, the 24 year old native of Gothenburg boasts two goals and four points – not overly offensive in nature, but solid production from a player known more for his size than anything.

As the trade deadline approaches, it’s important to remember that teams will be reassigning prospects both to make room for incoming trade deadline acquisitions and to ensure that younger players will remain eligible for the 2016 AHL post-season. Players who are up with their respective NHL clubs at the time of the AHL roster freeze will not be eligible to return to the minors to help with playoff pushes, although players in the AHL during the freeze are eligible to then return to the NHL to help out in that post-season. This could be the case with Svedberg, as he’s helped with the team’s depth throughout the year but could still be serviceable to the Ice Hogs this spring.
