Chicago Blackhawks’ forward Andrew Shaw may be in hot water after appearing to make an obscene gesture and directing a homophobic slur at an official during Game 4 of the club’s Western Conference quarter final series with the St. Louis Blues.

Shaw was assessed a two minute minor penalty for interference with just over two minutes remaining in the game, after shoving Blues defenseman Jay Bouwmeester in to the goal.

The 24-year-old then appeared to gesture at the referee twice on the way to the penalty box.

The incident was further compounded when Shaw appeared to shout a homophobic slur at the official from the penalty box.

Per Mark Lazerus of the Chicago Sun-Times, Shaw told reporters after the game that he did not remember what he’d said.

“Emotions were high. I don’t know what I said. I wasn’t happy with the call.”

The incident could be of considerable embarrassment to the league, and Chicago, as they look to work more closely with groups such as the You Can Play Project.

A number of teams, including the Blackhawks, have formed partnerships with You Can Play in a bid to make the sport accessible to everyone.

Even without Shaw’s outburst, the timing of the penalty could not have been worse for Chicago, who were trailing 4-3 at the time.

St. Louis saw out the final 124 seconds to seal victory and extend their lead in the series to 3-1 with game five scheduled to take place at the Scottrade Center on Friday (face-off 9:30PM EST).
