The Chicago Blackhawks saw their season end prematurely, but forward Artem Anisimov has been using his time off the ice to get healthy again for next season.

The Blackhawks confirmed on Tuesday that Anisimov underwent successful surgery to repair an injury in his right wrist. He’ll need six to eight weeks to recover, then should be able to resume ‘full hockey activities’.

Drafted 54th overall by the New York Rangers in 2006, Anisimov was dealt first to the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2012 (as part of the deal that sent Rick Nash to New York), then to the Chicago Blackhawks in the summer of 2015. He was the biggest point producer in Chicago’s return for winger Brandon Saad, who was sent out of the Central Division last offseason due to cap space implications.

In his first season with Chicago, Anisimov put up solid numbers as a top six forward; his 20 goals and 42 points in 77 games for the Illinois club were good for sixth on the team in scoring through the regular season. He then contributed with three goals in seven postseason games, before the Blackhawks were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the St. Louis Blues.

Now that Anisimov is on his way to recovery, the Blackhawks can hope that he’ll look as good next season as he did this year; with a tough cap situation, the team will need any returning players to perform at optimum levels.
